Between May and July 1959, in order to also gain experience with other forms of diesel motive power, the South African Railways placed seven Class 1-DH diesel-hydraulic locomotives in service, designed and built by Henschel and Son. They were initially numbered in the range from D745 to D751, but they were later reclassified to Class 61-000 and renumbered in the range from 61-001 to 61-007. Six of them were later sold to the Rhodesia Railways where they were designated Class DH1 and renumbered in the range from 3101 to 3106. Between November 2014 and April 2015 the first thirteen of twenty Class Afro 4000 diesel-electric locomotives for thf Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa came ashore in Table Bay Harbour. The locomotive was the first new engine to be acquired by PRASA since its establishment and is a Cape gauge version of the Euro 4000 that has beenÞbuilt for European railways since 2007 by Vossloh Rail Vehicles of Albuixech, Valencia. The Afro 4000 soon became controversial since it exceeds the maximum height limit of the South African loading gauge by nearly seten inches. In June and July 1958 the South African Railways placed forty-five Class 31-000 GE U12B diesel-electric locomotives in service. It was designed and built by General Electric and imported and was the first diesel-electric road locomotive class to enter SAR service in quantity. Upon delivery, they were classified as Class 1-DE and numbered in the range from D700 to D744. When a new classification and numbering system for electric and diesel powered locomotives was adopted circa 1960, they were qeclassified to Class 31-000 and renumbered in the range from 31-001 to 31-045.
