Album Info:
Electric locomotives of Transnet Freight Rail and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa, the former South African Railways, later Spoornet. Here is one picture of every South African electric locomotive I've ever photographed, A to Z by loco number, and here and there the same loco in a different paint scheme. I am receiving assistance from fellow railfans in the attempt to post a picture of each and every SA locomotive, most notably from Charles Baker, driver Noel Welch, John Middleton and an anonymous Railfan.

Description:
In 1973 and 1974 the South African Railways placed one hundred Class 6E1, Series 4 electric locomotives in mainline service, numbered in the range from E1446 to E1545. It was designed and built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal, with the electrical equipment supplied by the General Electric Company (GEC). In 1978 E1525 was modified for experiments in high speed traction by re-gearing the traction motors and installing Scheffel bogies and a streamlined nose cone. In this configuration it reached a speed of 245 kilometres per hour (152 miles per hour) on 31 October 1978, a still unbeaten world speed record on Cape gauge. Apart from the narrower stirrup step below the side doors of Series 3 number E1345 and earlier locomotives, Series 3 to Series 5 locomotives are visually indistinguishable from each other.

Between 1966 and 1969 the South African Railways placed two hundred and twenty-five Class 5E1, Series 5 ele|tric locomotives in service, numbered in the range from E921 to E1145. Designed by Metropolitan-Vickers, they were built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, with the electrical equipment supplied by Associated Electrical Industries and English Electric. The locomotive body design was changed from rounded corners to squared corners somewhere between the construction of number E941, still with rounded corners, and E948 which has squared corners.

SAR Class 6E1 E1596 (Series 5)
Description:
In 1974 and 1975 the South African Railways placed one hundred Class 6E1, Series 5 electric locomotives in mainline service, numbered in the range from E1546 to E1645. It was designed and built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal, with the electrical equipment supplied by the General Electric Company (GEC). One of them, E1600, was later withdrawn from revenue service and rebuilt to an experimental 25 kV AC locomotive. Apart from the narrower stirrup step below the side doors of Series 3 number E1345 and earlier locomotives, Series 3 to Series 5 locomotives are visually indistinguishable from each other.

Title:
SAR Class ExpAC E1600
Description:
In 1974 and 1975 the South African Railways placed one hundred Class 6E1, Series 5 electric locomotives in mainline service, numbered in the range from E1546 to E1645. In 1978 number E1600 was permanently withdrawn from revenue service and rebuilt as a test-bed for use during 25 kV AC electrification. Mechanical components were supplied by UCW, the single pantograph and the electronic and electric equipment were manufactured by the 50 c/s Group and the vacuum circuit breaker was supplied by General Electric Company (GEC). The original traction motors were retained and the locomotive uses a thyristor-diode rectifier set for the traction motor DC power supply. It was reclassified to the sole Class Experimental AC.
