Here is page one of a five-page cover article by Frederick Westing entitled "An American Beauty." It was published originally in the August 1954 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 22. Photo Caption: "It's a sight to warm the heart of a turn-of-the-century railroader as D16d No. 5069 wheels a smart string of varnish down a multiple-track right of way, her gait guarded by semaphores on signal bridges." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5069, a D-16D (4-4-0) "American" built in the Altoona Machine Shops as Philadelphia, Wilmington, & Baltimore Railroad number "69" during March of 1900, renumbered "5069" in 1903, rebuilt as a D-16B in April of 1911, renumbered "5569," and retired in June of 1922 after 22 years of faithful service. |
