Vistas. Here is the first of three original photos that I took from atop the former Pennsylvania Railroad Test Plant building in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during June of 1973. Shown here in this East-facing view is all that is left of THE Altoona Works/12th Street Shops. On the far right is the Master Mechanics Building, now the home of the Railroaders Memorial Museum. The massive four-story shop buildings and the power plant are gone. The two buildings remaining are now owned by Altoona Pipe & Steel. On the other side of the tracks, the old Altoona Passenger Station has been demolished to make way for the 10th Avenue Expressway; railroad passengers have to huddle in a house trailer on the other side of the new 12th Street Footbridge. |
